Lesson no.3

In this lesson, I would like to discuss about the type of train in Malaysia. Based on my experience, I used public transport to travel between cities to avoid traffic jam and to reduce the toll and fuel consumption. For instance, KTM (Kereta Api Tanah Melayu), MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), LRT (Light Rail Transit) and ETS (Eletric Train Service). Different places in Malaysia require different type of train that can be operated in certain railways.

During semester 1 & 2, I constantly use ETS to travel from my home in Selangor at KL Sentral Station back to UUM, Sintok at Arau Station. I use KTM service when I want to go to KL Sentral during my diploma to go to Jalan Tar during fasting period to buy cloth for Eid-Fitri Festival. During Asian cup, I use LRT to go to Stadium Bukit Jalil to watch football between Malaysia and Asian countries such as Thailand.

  • Commuter Rail Service (KTM)

  • Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

  • Light Rapid Transit (LRT)

  • Electric Train Service (ETS)

  • Monorail Service

  • Airport Rail Link Service

  • Tram Service (Cyberjaya)

Rapid transit systems are electric trains that run on an exclusive right-of-way that is not accessible to pedestrians or other vehicles of any kind and is frequently grade-separated in tunnels or on elevated railways. It is a type of high-capacity public transportation that is commonly encountered in cities.

LIGHT RAPID TRANSIT (LRT)

Rapid transit is utilised in cities, agglomerations, and metropolitan areas to carry massive amounts of people often over short distances. The size of the rapid transit system varies widely between cities, as do the various transportation methods.

ELECTRIC TRAIN SERVICE (ETS)

ETS is an inter-city electric rail service that is operated by KTMB. By cutting down significantly on travel time over the previous coaches, the ETS is currently the fastest inter-state train service in Malaysia.

ETS route map in Malaysia is currently operating from Gemas in Negeri Sembilan to Padang Besar up north in Perlis.

KLIA Express is a non-stop airport rail link servicing the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Malaysia. It runs from KL Sentral, the main railway station of Kuala Lumpur to KLIA as well as its low-cost terminal which is KLIA2.

The line is one of the two services on the Express Rail Link (ERL) system, sharing the same tracks as the KLIA Transit

CYBERJAYA TRAM SERVICE

A trackless automated rapid transit (ART) could feature in Cyberjaya as the next generation of the city’s public transport system soon. The success of the pilot project may help Cyberjaya achieve a reduction of carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.

Cyberjaya would be the second city in the country to run the ART, after service provider Mobilus Sdn Bhd completed a four-month trial  for the Iskandar Malaysia Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), recording more than 2,000km in distance covered in the southern region.
